WOODPECKERS--DOWNY
The downy woodpecker is a small grayish black and
white woodpecker. Males have a red patch on the back of their head. The
birds peck on wood homes, preferring cedar siding. The birds aren't looking
for food like sapsucker but looking for a nesting area. Birds are protected
by the State of Illinois from trapping or shooting.
Scare the birds away with strips of aluminum foil
or tin foil, or plastic bags tacked to the side of the house.
Create a nesting box 4 inches by 4 inches by 9 inches
tall with a 1 1/4 inch hole seven inches above the floor.
