FERNS--BROWN PUSTULES

Rows of brown shell-like pustules on the underside of fern leaves, especially Boston and Maidenhair ferns, are spore casings and NOT insects. Do not remove.

The spores are an indication that the plant is growing ideally and is trying to propagate itself.
