DAHLIA--WINTER STORAGE

After a light frost, cut dahlias to four to six (4 to 6) inches above the soil. Dig tubers carefully with a spade or spading fork, taking care not to damage the fleshy root system. Keep as much of the soil attached as possible. Allow soil to dry. This can be done in the garden for several hours after digging or by laying on screens for a day. Make sure tubers do not freeze. Check tubers carefully and discard any diseased or damaged ones.

Store tubers in cardboard boxes between layers of vermiculite, peat moss, sawdust or wood shavings. Place a two to three (2 to 3) inch layer of material in the box and then a layer of the dahlias. Cover lightly with material and continue to layer. Store in a 35 to 45 degree location.

Check tubers throughout the winter. If shriveling occurs, moisten packing material lightly with water. If roots appear to be rooting, move to a drier location; watch humidity levels.
