CHESTNUT--RIPE

Chestnuts are ripe when the burs start falling from the tree. Burs remaining on the tree can be twisted off, though a leather glove is recommended for use since the burs are sharp and spiny.

Burs can be collected; as they dry, they will split into sections, exposing the nuts inside.
