AFRICAN VIOLET--LIGHT
Light is crucial for African violets to bloom. Without
it, plants remain green with leaves slightly cupping upward. Too much
light will cause foliage to look droopy and brown along the leaf margins.
A healthy African violet will bloom for three months
and then rest for a month.
African violets require at least eight hours of filtered
light (east or west exposure) per day. Keep plants close to the window,
but watch out for cold weather.
If supplemental lighting is used, place plants no
closer than six (6) inches and no further than twelve (12) inches from
fluorescent lights. Use a timer to regulate eight to ten hours of simulated
daylight.
Incandescent light bulbs tend to give off too much
heat and can burn leaves. If used, incandescent bulbs should be at least
fifteen (15) inches from the top of the plant.
