CONTAINER GARDENS

Using containers is a great way to maintain plants in a small garden and add focal points in larger spaces. Since they are generally light enough to move, it easy to change a scene: just rearrange the grouping or install seasonal plants. Use your imagination, containers can be almost anything -- terra cotta pots, window boxes, galvanized tins to old coffee cans! Whatever style of container you choose, allow for adequate drainage and fertilize regularly to keep your plants healthy. Our photos show Container Gardens that are remarkable in their simplicity of design and repetition of plant material. A fine example of how "less is more."

What a terrific still life this collection makes. The cheerful primrose and hyacinth in an antique ceramic bowl make a lovely spring presentation. It's small scale make it perfect for a tabletop, indoors or out.

This garden is part of more extensive gardens at Villa Noailles in Hyeres, France. It's geometric design, repetition of squares with identical terra cotta containers creates a feeling of tranquility and coolness -- an oasis from the heat of the day. Perfect geometric combination -- repetition of squares with identical terra cotta containers.

A rustic oblong container is perfect for trimmed boxwood. The low plantings are easy to maintain. They provide a touch of green to warm and soften the hard surfaces of the paved street and aggregate patio. The planter also helps to define the space between the patio and the street.

The terra cotta containers with daffodils add color to this early spring garden. Containers of different sizes, styles and color add interest and dimension to a garden.
